In common, I’m sure, with all of us who knew Jeff and had the privilege of being influenced by him, I am devastated by the news of his passing.
I came to refereeing late in life, and to my very great good fortune, Jeff delivered the second half of my course. We hit it off, and he became the biggest single influence on my development.
He had outstanding generosity of spirit, a raffish sense of humour, and to say that he would go out of his way to improve referees is an understatement. I didn’t appreciate quite how much until I realised that he’d come all the way from Caterham to Sparrows Lane just to watch me on a Saturday morning.
His coaching was legendary in its directness, and he held all of us to the highest of standards, but woe betide anyone else who criticised any of his refs unfairly. He also knew when we needed puncturing and when we needed building up.
A great man, a brilliant coach, a truly outstanding individual, Jeff’s influence will be felt by generations of referees to come, in London and beyond.
So long Boss, we’ll miss you. X.
